Back home to the Potomac

The sirens at gate 20 in JFK’s Terminal 5 are making babies cry.  I couldn’t sleep on the plane.  But I have a smile.  In a few short hours I’ll be home. I was born and raised in suburban Virgina, just outside Washington, DC.  While I was in Peru, my parents sold the house and moved [...]

California Part II

While the boys were running the Golden Gate section of the SF American, my personal mission was to be as helpful as possible. I drove 3 separate groups of paddlers to the top of the run. I bought the guys a 24-pack of PBR (Portland!). I flirted with Safeway bakery girl and ate too many [...]

A perfect day on Opal Creek

There is absolutely nothing better than paddling a new section of river with good friends.  Saturday we had a beautiful day and I paddled waterfalls and rapids I’d yet to see.

Cali Trip Part. I – My first shoulder injury

As I type this, I’m sitting the Safeway parking lot in Pollock Pines, CA. I just dropped of my buddies at the top of the Golden Gate section of the SF American River. I’m not paddling because I hurt my shoulder, the first shoulder injury of my kayaking career. We charged hard yesterday, my paddling [...]

Spring Paddling – Yellow Jacket Creek

Yellowjacket Creek was one of the best days last spring.  Set in a beautiful, remote gorge west of Mt. St. Helens, I paddled this river with some of my best friends.  Great people in great places – life couldn’t be sweeter. Tomorrow I am headed to the promised land  – California.  Mike, my roomate and paddling [...]

Things I don’t like to see

Sidewinder is not a rapid I like.  A technically difficult line leads directly into a dangerous, intimidating undercut rock.  All the water flows exactly where you don’t want to be.  I’ve yet to run this rapid.

Costa Rica Creeking

The cold, harsh winds now blowing in Portland make me long for warmer days. I thought I’d throw up a few shots from last winter, when John Haddock and I had a blast in Costa Rica. Warm water, bright sun, steep creeks and endless jamon y quesos – life couldn’t have been sweeter.

Upper Tualatin: Not Really Recommended

Saturday was going to be a good day. Christie Glissmeyer, Jesse Becker and Jason Schroeder were coming to PDX from Hood River to get some goods. With warm temperatures melting the snow and rain falling we expected the Coast Range to have good flows. They were just too good- our original destination, the Grays River [...]

Rich Hardy on Sunset Falls on the EF Lewis

Rich grew up, and learned to kayak, with my roommate Mike Gottlieb. He came out for his first adventure trip to the West Coast this May and had a blast. We hit some of the ultra-classic Portland-area creeks – Canyon Creek, Opal Creek and Rock Creek. Rich and Mike also took a trip out to [...]
