Salmon River Gorge – the toughest day of the year

I’m finding it difficult to digest everything that happened yesterday in the Salmon River Gorge. So much physical and mental energy was expended that I cannot think in anything more than bits and pieces.

California Part II

While the boys were running the Golden Gate section of the SF American, my personal mission was to be as helpful as possible. I drove 3 separate groups of paddlers to the top of the run. I bought the guys a 24-pack of PBR (Portland!). I flirted with Safeway bakery girl and ate too many donuts. Trying to maintain public optimism in the face of increasing swelling and discomfort in my shoulder was difficult. I didn’t want to smile and joke.  I wanted to be miserable. I wanted to be kayaking. I didn’t want to be sitting in a truck in the middle of a whitewater fantasyland. Read More »

Copper Creek Video

Copper Creek from Dave Hoffman on Vimeo.

A little while ago I finally paddled Copper Creek.  This particular run had been eluding me for awhile.  Runnable mostly off of rainfall in the winter and early spring, the road leading to the put-in is often rendered impassible by snow.  Mike Gottlieb, Josh Armagost and I found a window and got in there in late March of this year.  Enjoy the video!

A perfect day on Opal Creek

There is absolutely nothing better than paddling a new section of river with good friends.  Saturday we had a beautiful day and I paddled waterfalls and rapids I’d yet to see.

Cali Trip Part. I – My first shoulder injury

As I type this, I’m sitting the Safeway parking lot in Pollock Pines, CA. I just dropped of my buddies at the top of the Golden Gate section of the SF American River. I’m not paddling because I hurt my shoulder, the first shoulder injury of my kayaking career. We charged hard yesterday, my paddling partner Mike and I running the hardest section of the South Fork of the Yuba River, just west of Truckee, CA. Read More »

Spring Paddling – Yellow Jacket Creek

Yellowjacket Creek was one of the best days last spring.  Set in a beautiful, remote gorge west of Mt. St. Helens, I paddled this river with some of my best friends.  Great people in great places – life couldn’t be sweeter.

Tomorrow I am headed to the promised land  – California.  Mike, my roomate and paddling buddy since high school, are headed south for what will be a great trip.  See ya’ll in 9 days.  -Dave

I Nearly Killed My Roommate

Yesterday my roommate  Mike and I kayaked a few practice runs for the 2009 Northwest Creek Competition.  I almost decapitated him.  My Go Pro head cam was on and it captured every glorious second. Read More »

Things I don’t like to see

Headed towards the undercut

Sidewinder is not a rapid I like.  A technically difficult line leads directly into a dangerous, intimidating undercut rock.  All the water flows exactly where you don’t want to be.  I’ve yet to run this rapid. Read More »
